Vision Enhancement through the low Vision Examination
What does low vision mean?
"Low vision" doesn't always mean what it says. Being referred
for a low vision exam does not necessarily mean one has "low vision" or "little
vision". It is a broader field developed for people who have suffered
a moderate to severe vision less, but also includes those who are dealing with
a slight vision impairment. It does not mean that you are losing your vision
or that your doctor expects you to. Another term for low vision is "vision
rehabilitation".
Who is helped by low vision examination?
Anyone who feels their reading vision is not as good as it could be because
of conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma
should consider this type of care. Even patients who are only slightly bothered
by these conditions should be evaluated.
What is the goal of low vision testing?
With the help of magnification, properly and precisely prescribed, you will
maintain your ability to read in most cases. Magnification can often be prescribed
in the form of reading glasses. When necessary, the following is also discussed:
- Improved lighting for increased contrast
- Eliminating glare with special filters
- Simple magnification aids
- Telescopic and microscopic visual aids
- Electronic visual aids such as the closed circuit enlarger
- Non-optical visual aids such as check writing guides
- Mobility, travel, and safety
